Some of the most popular pergola designs include the Tuscany design and the Classic Rustic Design.  The Tuscany design is derived from the Tuscany area in Italy where outdoor living is extended through the mild autumn and into the winter by adding such features as a fire place or fire pit.

Many of the properties in that area of Italy cater for the heat of midday by being made of stone and thus keeping the temperature down during the heat of the day.  Because of the wonderful climate, the chill of night is often not felt until near on midnight and a small fire will keep the ambiance alive all night long.

For the more classic pergola designs, you can look at the all american cedar arch design.  Taking elements from the quakers roof structure, it give a much more romantic look to your garden with less straight lines and more flow.  Having this type of design will not limit you to the uses of your pergola either, with them being used as outside bar areas, gardening shelters and bbq areas.   With the addition of just a table and chairs, you have a wonderful el fresco area that can be used any time of the day or night.

I would like to add that it is helpful to consider the design of your home when deciding what pergola design to go with. If your home is a classic design, a classic pergola design will look better. On the contrary, if you have a mediterranean style home, the Tuscan style pergola design would look nice.
